Why switch energy supplier

Switching your energy supplier and finding cheaper tariffs will save you money. It is estimated that an average household can save up to £200 by switching their energy suppliers.

This is especially true for people who have come to the end of their energy contract or are on the Standard tariff from their energy supplier.

If you had enrolled onto a deal with your energy supplier and it has now finished. They will automatically put you on their standard tariff. This is why you should look for another deal.

When looking for a new energy deal, it is a good idea to shop around and check out a number of quotes from providers before signing up with a suppler.

What is the standard tariff?

The standard tariff is the worst deal or price that is available for your energy. The standard tariff does not give you the best value for money.

With the standard tariff, you are paying more money for the unit of energy you use. That is why usually when you are out of contract with your energy deal, they provider will put you on to the standard tariff.

Payment meters

People on payment meters get the worst value and prices for their energy. They will pay more for each unit of energy they buy.

If you are on a payment meter, see if you can go off it. Your energy supplier should allow you to do that.

Your energy supplier might not let you go off the payment meter, if you are in debt and are still owing money to the them. You might be paying back a portion of your debt from the money you top-up onto the payment meter.

For example, if you topped up £10, then they might take £3 from this amount towards your debt payment.

However, when you have paid back your debt, you should be able to come off it.

Do I always need to switch to get a better deal for my energy?

You might not necessarily have to switch your energy supplier to get a better deal or to save money on your gas and electricity.

Ask the energy supplier you are with, if they will give you a better deal. You will have to wait for the contract you presently on to finish before they will move you to another deal.

When is the best time to switch energy supplier?

The best time to switch energy supplier is when the deal you are presently on finishes. This is because you will not get penalised for breaking your existing contract.
